Jean Paul Gaultier - Stars Attend Yves Saint Laurent Funeral

Stars have gathered in Paris to pay their respects to the influential fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent today.

Some 800 mourners, including French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni, attended his funeral ceremony at the Saint-Roch church.

The designer died at his home on Sunday at the age of 71.

Hundreds of onlookers applauded as the designer's coffin made its way to the church, with the ceremony later relayed on giant screens.

Saint Laurent is famous for the designing the female trouser suit and most of the women, including Ms Bruni, at today's ceremony wore the iconic item of clothing.

The majority of Paris' designers were present at the funeral, including Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Sonia and Nathalie Rykiel, Kenzo Takada, and Valentino.

Saint Laurent's former lover and long-time business partner, Pierre Berge, said of the famous designer: "He turned fashion on its head, making it socially relevant rather than merely aesthetic.

"With Saint Laurent, women ceased being merely clothes-horses or the objects of designer fantasies."
